blizzard
so we had a blizzard here last week, and my what a blizzard it was!
actually, by midwest standards it wouldn’t even register, as we only
had maybe 6 inches of snow and it was all melted within a few days.
but the effects it had on my little town…
firstly, somehow, defying all laws of physics and logic, the streets
continue to be full of water while the river remains dry. could
someone explain this to me? because i always thought water traveled
downhill…
secondly, the snowfall knocked out electricity and water. though
both have returned to the town proper, MY electricity has decided to
take a little vacation of sorts. basically i think some of the
gallons of water that soaked into my cement roof got into some of
the poorly insulated wires and, whenever i reset my “fuse box” it
throws sparks and blows a “fuse.” (please note that i have
two “fuses” which consist of some copper wire strung between two
nails with a ceramic box over the whole contraption.) i’ve got power
rigged up to half my house, and have moved my refridgerator to one
of the two working outlets, but the other side of my house is just
going to have to wait until summer comes and dries out all my wires
again. until then i am cooking and peeing in the dark (and sleeping,
though i usually do that in the dark anyway).
lastly, the snow melted into all the mudbrick structures the day
after the snowfall, and then froze overnight. the effect was similar
to putting soda in the freezer. basically about half the mud
structures in town (which constitute about half the town) suffered
some sort of damage. some houses are gone entirely. some lost outer
walls, giving bizarre and jagged views into their interiors. i don’t
think anyone was hurt but the town looks pretty bad. people are just
now starting to shovel the rubble into the backs of trucks and haul
it away.in non-weather related news, my grant is down to $1200. if anyone
wants to hit up their places of worship, you are more than welcome
to spread the word. or spam your offices with the internet address.
it couldn’t hurt. and it might relieve some of your office stress.okay, i can’t feel my fingers anymore so that’s usually the time to
go home and fire up some candles. i hope you’re all peachy-keen!love,
jocelyn.
