SageGlass Announces Lowest Embodied Carbon Electrochromic IGUs in the Industry

New EPDs Reinforce SageGlass' Commitment to Sustainability and Transparency in the Built Environment

SageGlass, the pioneer of electrochromic glass technology and subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, announced the release of new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its dynamic glass products in North America. These EPDs underscore SageGlass' leadership in sustainability, detailing significant reductions in the embodied carbon of its Insulating Glass Units (IGUs) and offering transparency to customers committed to sustainable building practices.

EPDs are third-party verified documents that quantify the environmental impact of a product, including energy use, emissions, and resource consumption. By providing EPDs for its products, SageGlass offers architects, designers, and builders essential information to make informed decisions in creating environmentally responsible buildings. These EPDs align with global sustainability standards and are an important tool for projects seeking LEED certification or other green building certifications.

This milestone reflects the company's dedication to continuous innovation and environmental stewardship. Since 2020, SageGlass has achieved a remarkable 64%1 reduction in the embodied carbon of its IGUs, driven by ongoing efforts to reduce electricity and natural gas consumption, improved manufacturing efficiency, investments in renewable energy generation and the scaling effects of higher production volumes.

“At Saint-Gobain, we are dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts in the built environment,” said Brad Hanson, General Manager of SageGlass. “The introduction of these EPDs is a testament to SageGlass’ commitment to transparency and decarbonization. As the demand for low-carbon building materials continues to grow, we are proud to provide solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations of our customers and the industry.”

Additionally, the lower embodied carbon values for SageGlass bring them much closer to regular low-e IGUs. “With these new values, SageGlass has the lowest embodied carbon in the electrochromic industry, but more importantly, is comparable to conventional low-e IGUs with exterior shading solutions” said Jordan Doria, SageGlass Global Marketing Director. “When you consider this along with the operational carbon savings electrochromic glass has always provided, the sustainability attributes are very strong”.

SageGlass solutions have long been recognized for their ability to reduce energy consumption, enhance occupant comfort, and contribute to sustainable building practices. The newly released EPDs further highlight the company’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship. With these declarations, SageGlass continues to lead the way in providing advanced glazing solutions that support sustainable construction and contribute to healthier, more resilient buildings.
